These days, it can be easy to take safety for granted in our vehicles because technology and engineering have progressed so far.

But all vehicles are not created equal. Safety standards have advanced over the years, meaning some models have fallen behind while others continue to shine. So, what about Honda? Are Honda models keeping up with the latest safety standards.

The IIHS runs a number of collision tests, but they also look at some of the advanced safety tech that is available on the vehicles as well.

The criteria will each receive their own rating, but the models that score the best will earn the Top Safety Pick monicker. The very best of that group will receive additional recognition, being named a Top Safety Pick+.

How did Honda do? For 2023, Honda had an impressive three models that earned one of those two recognitions. The 2023 Honda CR-V, HR-V and Odyssey all received the highest recognition of being named a Top Safety Pick+. In addition, the 2023 Honda Civic Sedan and Civic Hatchback both receive the Top Safety Pick recognition. Some of the reasons for these ratings included Superior scores for frontal collision prevention tech in the form of Honda Sensing.

That being said, advanced safety technology can’t solve everything when it comes to safety. Much of it comes down to the way the vehicle was engineered and built. When it comes to Honda models, a big part of their successful safety scores is due to Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure, or ACE. ACE is designed to protect vehicle occupants in some of the worst collisions, frontal collisions. It also utilizes pre-tensioning front seatbelts and airbags that protect the front, side and knees of the passengers.
