Honda Pastport April Fool’s Joke is Blast From the 90s

Bring back the ‘90s! Actually, it looks like Honda just did. It’s called the Honda Pastport and…

you might say that it’s all that and a bag of chips.

However, as the press release and YouTube commercial for this new trim level appeared on April 1st  (or April Fool’s Day), we had some more investigating to do.

Here’s what happened when we clicked play.

We Pressed Play And…

With a backdrop of zig zags and scribbles reminiscent of the intro to*insert ‘90s sitcom name*, ‘90s lovers like us could easily intuit the Pastport’s tongue-in-cheek theme.

Then they name-drop Fred Savage (or Kevin from The Wonder Years) as being the “official voice” of the Honda brand and there’s no doubt left.

“The authentic look of the Passport on the outside, yet simplified with everything you love about the 90s on the inside,” Savage says via voiceover.

As car brands hardly ever simplify, we were now in on the joke.

The fun YouTube video transitions to a Day-Glowed rollerblader all but doing pirouettes to check out the Pastport’s interior. What he finds is a

  • Coin holder (wow)
  • Digital Clock
  • Beeper Mount
  • Navigation System (which ends up being a fold-out map)
  • A/C (yes, A/C)
  • one button on the steering wheel, the horn!

The YouTube video ends with Day-Glo rollerblader showing off his CDs and—you got it—placing an order for a Pastport on an early-‘90s era cellphone.

At the very least, all of this hi-jinx proves that Honda loves a good laugh.
