Is the Honda HR-V a Good Vehicle for Older Adults?

Life is full of changes. One moment you’re getting married, having your first child and buying your first family vehicle. In those early family years, you may prefer a vehicle with tons of space for both seating and cargo. Minivans and large SUVs have likely been your go-to choice for vehicles for many years.

But as we said, life changes, and if you’re at a point now where the kids are all out of the house, you may be wondering what the right vehicle is for a couple of empty nesters. You still have plenty of options to choose from, but a large SUV or minivan may not be the best option at this point in life (at least not as a primary vehicle).

In the past, sedans were often a great option for couples who no longer had kids at home. While sedans can still be great for some drivers, another type of vehicle has become popular among empty nesters over the last several years. That vehicle class is known as subcompact SUVs, such as the Honda HR-V.

Honda HR-V Features That Are Great for Older Adults

Why a subcompact SUV? Well, the subcompact class is the smallest SUV class available, meaning you get all the versatility of an SUV (something you won’t get with a sedan) without the large size of an SUV. Subcompact SUVs are also often preferred by older adults over sedans because they are easier to get in and out of, as they have a higher ride height and don’t require you to bend down to enter the doorway.

Ironically, subcompact SUVs like the HR-V are popular among young adults and new teen drivers as well. Regardless, the HR-V offers plenty of features that are perfect for retired adults. For instance, the 2024 HR-V offers features like Real-Time AWD for surefooted driving and efficient operation that can achieve a gas mileage of up to 32 mpg highway, making it great for retired adults on a fixed income. Other features you may love as someone in your golden years include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, illuminated door sill trim (just in case your eyesight isn’t what it used to be) and advanced safety systems like the Blind Spot Information System that gives you peace of mind while driving with the grandkids. The HR-V also offers power-adjustable seating so that you can get the seat exactly where you need it to avoid aches and pains on those long drives.
