Liz and Ananya’s Honda Fit Road Trip

Never stop exploring! Here’s what Liz and Ananya discovered when they drove to the Four Corners monument in a Honda Fit.

I love my home life. My work life too.

I just love adventuring more!

After all, there’s something magical about the experiences

you have while you’re indulging your #travelbug.      

Doing so allows you

the opportunity to see so many beautiful destinations.

My best friend Ananya has always shared this enthusiasm.

So when I came home from work on Friday to her swiping

through photos of Four Corners, Arizona,

I knew what was coming next.

“I want to stand in two states at the same time!” Ananya bursts out excitedly.

“In just a few seconds we’d be standing in two more,” I answer with a grin.

Shortly thereafter, we’re packing up the Honda Fit and leaving our home in Denver for Arizona.

Out on the Open Road

Out on the open road, we’re collecting so much material for our #instatravel account.

The setting sun is making the scenery around

us *all the more alluring*.

Thankfully, our Honda Fit is giving us excellent gas mileage as we make our way through beautiful Colorado.

But before we get too tired behind the wheel,

we pull into a cute bed-and-breakfast that Liz had read about on her phone earlier.

Our B&B turns out to be as quaint as it looked online.

The next morning—after a good night’s sleep—the owner

puts a delicious cup of cappuccino into our hands.

We thank her before heading out to finish our journey.

Home Stretch

The southwestern Colorado town of Cortez is an archaeological wonder.

Being there is a bit like stepping back in time.

Mesa Verde National Park and Ute Mountain Tribal Park are wondrous.

Our road to Four Corners evokes the types of feelings you’d get while reading Pablo Neruda.  

For me, I Remember You As You Were comes to mind. 

(Although, to be clear, Neruda’s poems weren’t

necessarily about the U.S. Southwest =)

Once we’ve found Four Corners, we love, love, love

skipping from one state to another.

Four Corners Found! 10 Things We Learned During our Time There

Here’s what Liz and I learned during our AMAZING trip to Four Corners. 

1. Four Corners is the ONLY place in the U.S. where the boundaries of four different states intersect at one single point.
2. Families who visit will want to make sure to have a checklist of items that includes plenty of fuel, an extra fuel tank, cash, food and drinks, and hand sanitizer.
3. While pets are allowed to be in the parking area, only service animals are allowed inside the actual monument.
4. Navajo vendors occupy permanent booths that surround the monument.
5. Visiting Four Corners also gives you a great chance to learn more about The Navajo Nation. (The Navajo or Dine, and the Ute people all live in the area around the monument).
6. The area is part of the high Colorado Plateau.
7. Edge of the Cedars State Park, which is a short drive away from the Four Corners Monument, is home to ancient relics and ruins from Pueblo People.
8. The Butler Wash Ruins, which are cliff dwellings of the Pueblo People, is a mere 10 minutes away from Edge of the Cedars State Park.
9. The scenic desolation of the American Southwest is ideal for painters, writers, and other artists looking for inspiration.
10. Some interesting books about the American Southwest include Three-Ten to Yuma and Other Stories by Elmore Leonard, The Wild Birds by Emily Strelow, and Motel Chronicles by Sam Shepherd.
