What is the criteria?

In case you’re wondering what exactly the criteria is to earn these two designations, we thought we’d give you the rundown. To get recognized as a TOP SAFETY PICK by the IIHS, a vehicle needs to achieve a rating of Good in both the driver- and passenger-side small overlap front tests as well as the original moderate overlap front test. It also needs to achieve a rating of Acceptable or Good in the updated side test as well as for its standard highlights. Finally, it must have an Advanced or Superior rating for its daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention technology.

To take things a step further and get the TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation, everything stays the same except for two changes. First, the updated side test also needs to earn a Good rating, and the vehicle must also offer nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention technology that earns either Advanced or Superior.
